Joaquin Phoenix is an academy award-winning actor to the world, but to this cow and her newborn calf, he is a saviour. Mirroring his Oscars acceptance speech in which he spoke to the plight of mother cows and their babies, Phoenix helped to liberate a cow and her one week old calf from a Los Angeles slaughterhouse and brought them to the Farm Sanctuary.
The “Joker” star just didn’t talk about the atrocities of factory farming during his Oscar speech but did something about it to free a cow and her calf from those very conditions. The rescue was unplanned while Phoenix was touring Manning Beef, a Southern California slaughterhouse. He decided to free the cow and her calf to live at Farm Sanctuary in Acton, California.
In his Oscars speech, Phoenix brought awareness to the milk industry: “I think we’ve become very disconnected from the natural world,” he said. “We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and when she gives birth we steal her baby, even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable. And then we take her milk that’s intended for the calf and we put it in our coffee and cereal.”
He named the mother cow as Liberty and her baby calf as Indigo to give them a new life at Farm Sanctuary where they can roam free in the hills. He is on a mission to spread kindness and compassion in every part of his life and this rescue just proves that he has the heart of gold. Well done, Joaquin for being the best example to humanity.
