Flashback: 20 Years Ago Mariah Carey Tops Billboard Charts With ‘Honey’

Music by Lucille Barilla on September 12, 2017

On Sept. 13, 1997, Mariah Carey scored her 12th number one hit with “Honey.” Can you believe it has been 20 years the tune hit the charts? Accompanied by a sassy video, Mariah cemented her iconic status, able to hold her own and surpass the other divas of the period.

The song was written and produced by Carey, Puff Daddy, Q-Tip and Stevie J. It was the first time Mariah had ventured outside of her power-ballad style of singing and into the world of hip-hop, a move she had wanted to make for many years prior to the tune’s release.

“Honey” scored a nomination at the 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. The song also won a BMI Pop Award for “Songwriter.” Mariah Carey’s body of work will be honored at VHI’s Hip Hop Honors on September 18, celebrating her groundbreaking hip-hop collaborations.
