“You Are My Sunshine” is just as precious and cherished as it was decades ago, and for one family the song is a Godsend for their little boy who has Down syndrome and has experienced severe health complications. For Amanda and Caleb Gray, the lullaby is a symbol of hope for their youngest son, Bo, who is their fifth child and an everlasting ray of sunshine.
At just 6 months old, Bo needed an atrioventricular (AV) canal repair. He experienced surgery complications and a second surgery put Bo in an induced coma. While in the ICU for several weeks, Bo’s parents, who are musicians wanted to sing “You Are My Sunshine” to him. They both sang and Caleb played the guitar and Bo moved his tiny little legs!
“This was the first time that he moved as he reacted to the familiarity of the song and our voices. We are firm believers in music therapy!” Amanda wrote on Facebook. Music continues to soothe and encourage Bo, who is now 25 months old. Watch Bo’s amazing reaction when his 12-year-old sister, Lydia, plays “You Are My Sunshine” today.”
